Obituary

Mrs. Katherine Byrnes Lewis, age 98, widow of the late Colonel Stephen A. Lewis, Sr. died on Wednesday, September 20, 2017.  Mrs. Lewis was born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1919 To Katherine and John J. Byrnes. She is survived by her step-daughter, Stephanie Lewis Sands of South Carolina; and by her daughter at heart, Cynthia Surman of Boca Raton.  Kay outlived four of the most important people in her life; her parents, husband and her only son, Stephen A. Lewis, Jr.  Mrs. Lewis was a graduate of Quinnipiac University in New Haven, Connecticut.  After her education she went to work for General Motors at the Connecticut office and was the administrative assistant and served as the Assistant Field Director of the American Red Cross in WWII.  After a tour in Frankfurt, Germany with her husband, she moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1950.  Once settled in Broward County she went to work for the Board of Education and was employed there for over 30 years.  The family were members of St. Clement’s Catholic Church and she belonged to the Society of Military Widows as well as the Retired Officers’ Wives Association.  Mrs. Lewis will be laid to rest next to the late Colonel Lewis at Arlington National Cemetery.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.KalisMcIntee.com
